Provider Michigan State University - Allegan County
Date of last update 11/12/2008
Description Classroom sessions for this training program are in English, with educational materials translated in both English and Spanish. The training program consists of 3 modules that cover the fundamentals of blueberry production, insect, disease and weed management, and includes a "Capstone" social component (Cross-cultural education, Leadership training, Farm Financial Management, Pesticide Safety, Taxes and your Farm Management). Concurrently, we offer training to prepare individuals for taking the test to obtain a "Private Pesticide" applicator certification. Training consists of 6 weeks of classroom, and hands-on lab and field experiences (1/month for 4 month). Classroom sessions are every Thursday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM (including breaks); and if needed an optional extra hour (5:00-6:00 PM) as a help session to clarify concepts and questions related to the teaching materials. Help sessions will be bilingual if needed. Each topic is 50-55 minutes long. This program is currently being offered to growers or farm workers for $250, and $500 for Private Consultants and corporate employees. There is currently a demand for well trained pest scouts in the blueberry industry. Pest scouting services pay a range of $20 - $45 per acre (these prices do not directly reflect hourly wages).
