Description The automotive shop runs like a small repair and auto parts business. All students are trained in basic shop practices and have hands-on experience working on vehicles. Students may train in the diagnosis and repair of brakes, suspensions, and electical,heating/air condiditioning, and engine performance systems, working toward state of Michigan and national (ASE) certifications. Students in the automotive technician track may be in the program from two to six terms. The program is based on the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) competency standards. Students may also focus on the customer service side of the auto parts business. Those students practice basic cataloging, inventory management and merchandizing skills. These students must complete a five (5) week work internship.

Admission Requirements Valid Driver's License and interview with instructor prior to acceptance. Student who most closely match the U.S. Department of Labor profile for an Automotive Mechanic are selected. Aptitude/Abilities: Verbal and numeric, good spatial, motor coordination, high manual dexterity, mechanical, problem-solving, interpersonal communications, strong learning ability, computer literate; Evironment: Loud, fumes; Physical Demands: Medium; Temperament: Like variety, makes judgements, precise; Educational Level 4 (Work Keys scale scores RFI 75-78, Writing 75-77, Applied Math 75-77) (CASAS scale scores Reading 221-235, Math 221-235, Writing 243-260)
