Description Die Casting Technology is one of the most fundamental of all industries in the manufacturing sector of the U.S. economy. Castings are used in 90% of all finished manufactured products. The die casting industry supplies complex parts to the automotive, furniture, appliance, medical, and electronics industries and many new applications for castings are introduced to the marketplace every year. Employment in the die casting industry is strong and growing in Southwestern Michigan. In fact, nearly 60% of all die casting manufacturing companies in the Western Hemisphere are located within 200 miles of the Southwestern Michigan College campus. And, nearly 35% of the jobs in the die casting industry in the U.S. are centered in five Midwest states that include Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Career opportunities in the die casting industry include: 1)Maintenance Technician 2)Die Casting Machine Operator 3)Machine Set-Up Technician 4)Trim Press Operator 5)Quality Technician 6)Process Engineer 7)Automation Technician According to the State of Michigan, the tri-county area of SW Michigan is expected to have a 12% growth in demand in the industry between 2000 and 2010. The average national beginning salary is $30,000 annually. Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor's degree through Ferris State University or other four-year institutions should contact their program advisor for specifics. Admission Requirements 1)You will need to demonstrate proficiencies in reading, English, and mathematics based on SMC assessment tests; ACT, SAT, or MEAP scores; or by taking the recommended classes. 2)You will need to demonstrate competency through testing in computer information systems. If unable to do so, you must take ISYS 110 (computer class). 3)Some of the courses in this curriculum have specific prerequisites. These are described in the course descriptions.
