Program Description for Electrical Systems Technology AAS

Description Electrical equipment service personnel install, maintain, and repair electrical and electronic equipment such as networked process controls, computer-controlled machinery, robotics, three-phase motors, and variable frequency motor drives. The emphasis is on today's technolgy, including networked controllers and interactive web-based asset management. Digital principles are presented in the context of programmable logic devices and microcontrollers. To prepare students for the emerging discipline of mechatronics, students are cross-trained in hydraulics, pneumatics, computer-assisted engineering and Microsoft Visual Basic.Net. Employment opportunities worldwide are excellent. National median salaries for experienced technicians is about $45,000 annually. This curriculum prepares the student to take the "Associate Electronics Technician" exam, an Electronics Technicians Association's base/entry level certification. Certification exams may be scheduled through the Testing Center at SMC. Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor's degree through Ferris State University or other four-year institutions should contact their program advisor for specifics. Admission Requirements 1)You will need to demonstrate proficiencies in reading, English, and mathematics based on SMC assessment tests; ACT, SAT, or MEAP scores; or by taking the recommended classes. 2)ACE testing is available for a number of the courses listed. 3)You will need to demonstrate competency through testing in computer information systems. If unable to do so, you must take ISYS 110 (computer class).
